FAQs

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 3D AND 4D IMAGE?

Nothing really, only that the 4D picture is a video.  4D stands for 4th dimension, which is time!

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR A 4D ULTRASOUND?

The best images are obtained between 24 – 34 weeks.  Babies imaged before this time are lacking the body fat that makes your baby look like themselves.  After 34 weeks, things are starting to get tight in there, which can make it hard to have adequate fluid in front of baby’s face; important for 3D/4D imaging.

WHY SHOULD I GO TO FIRST SIGHT 4D?

Compare our photo gallery!  No other site in the Edmonton area offers the life-like images we are able to produce at First Sight 4D.  First Sight 4D utilizes the latest and greatest in 4D imaging; it will feel as though baby is right there in the room with us!  Very exciting!

Your session will be performed by an experienced technologist who knows just how to optimize the pictures you desire.  While your medical exam does a fantastic job of getting the important images of brain, heart and spine, First Sight 4D will take the time, that they cannot, to get enchanting pictures of those loveable little toes, fingers and nose!

Our cozy, welcoming space will make you feel at home and stress-free so you can enjoy this time with your baby.  If bringing other children, we do have an adjoining play area to the scanning room, so the kids can choose to watch their little brother or sister, or play without disturbing your experience.

IS 3D/4D ULTRASOUND SAFE?

Many studies have been performed over the last 3 decades and none have shown any detrimental effects due to ultrasound use when used with an ultrasound machine made for human use.  They are limited as to how much energy they are able to emit.  If you have concerns, please, talk to your doctor before booking, or call or email with your questions.

WHAT HAPPENS IF BABY’S NOT COOPERATING?

Many factors can affect achieving great ultrasound pictures.  Baby’s position, amount of amniotic fluid, hands/feet/cord in front of baby’s face and mother’s body type can all play a part in the images we produce. Baby is also moving in there so generally, with a little time, baby will co-operate for its photo session!  We allow plenty of time for your visit; no rushing!

It is important to us that you are satisfied with your time with us. If we have difficulty in getting those beautiful pictures of baby during your visit, you’ll be welcomed to return at a later date at no charge.

SHOULD I DO ANYTHING SPECIAL BEFORE COMING IN?

There is no need to fill your bladder for this type of ultrasound.  It does help to be well hydrated to ensure good amniotic fluid volume in the uterus which helps achieve good pictures.  Baby will be more active if you have recently eaten; especially something sweet! Make that your excuse for the day to indulge! Juice will also work fine.

DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT AND/OR DOCTOR’S REFERRAL? DO I STILL NEED A CLINIC OR HOSPITAL ULTRASOUND?

First Sight 4D performs viewings for enjoyment only.  Because of this, you must have your doctor referred ultrasound performed prior to attending your First Sight 4D ultrasound.  The clinic can confirm your baby is healthy; we can confirm your baby is adorable!

We do require an appointment for your visit.  You can access our convenient online booking system to see what fits in with your schedule. We do offer evening and Saturday appointments.  These fill up quickly, so book early is this is important to you.

CAN I FIND OUT WHAT I’M HAVING DURING MY VISIT?

Yes you can if you choose to.  Though ultrasound is never 100% accurate in determining gender, a visit after 20 weeks offers a great opportunity to answer this question!  Of course, if you would like to wait until delivery, it is not a problem to keep the gender out of sight for your visit.  If baby is not cooperating during your time with us, you will be welcome to return later in the day or at a later date until we figure it out!

CAN I BRING MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS?

For sure! The more the merrier here!  We encourage you to bring grandparents, uncles, aunties, sisters, brothers, cousins, neighbors, girlfriends, co-workers…..the list goes on and on!  Oh, and of course bring daddy!  If you would like to have a private baby shower arranged (gender reveal perhaps?), email for more info.
